Woman like Hauwa: “It isn’t completely easy to create content”

Being a funny content creator is actually very hard, I assure you. If you’ve made people laugh a few times and then tried to take it to the internet and got no response, you’ll relate. Then there are people like Hauwa who don’t even have to try, making it seem like those of us who do are just being silly. Everything they say, write, or do is hilarious.

People like Hauwa have the world in the palm of their hands and can turn them like eba anyhow they want with their ability to create happiness through laughter. The Twitter thread below was my first introduction to Hauwa.

I kept going back to this thread like a masochist, laughing myself to a stupor. I literally had a hangover because of this thread. Then I discovered her Instagram profile, where she’s even funnier than on her Twitter. People loved her work, and she grew from a few thousand followers on Twitter to over 20 thousand followers in a few days of people rolling over themselves due to the thread. Now she has over 80 thousand followers on Twitter.

I just knew I had to introduce her to the Talku Talku family. So I went looking for her and finally got her to have a chat with me so that we can understand how she does what she does. Meet Hauwa, iyawo Kabiru.

Hi! Can you state your name and what you do for the record, please?

Hello! My name is Hauwa and I am a content creator, copywriter, digital marketing manager, and aspiring screenwriter.

How did you discover your talents?

I’ve always liked to write and draw comics. It has just always been there. I filled books with stories as a child.

It must have been easy choosing your career path. But how did you “decide” on becoming a career content strategist?

I was lucky enough to work for an agency that embraced my creative skills and I liked what I did so I decided to do it for myself full-time.

That’s what many creatives haven’t had the opportunity to do – to work somewhere their skills are prioritised. You’re lucky. So, what were your influences then, and what are your influences now?

I am very influenced by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

With a strong influence like that, you can’t go wrong. That means your niche is storytelling?

[My niches are] scriptwriting, women and societal issues, comic writing.

And you’re damn good at them too! Especially your comic writing. But which one of them is your favourite?

I am very interested in writing about the issues that women face in society. Nigeria is a country where women are repeatedly oppressed and it is an honour to lend my voice to the cause. I also really enjoy writing comedy.

What’s it about content creation that people on the outside tend to misunderstand, from your perspective?

That it is completely easy to create content. It isn’t.

I know, right?! They really do not know! So tell us, how can one actually become a career copywriter? Are there steps?

I am not a professional copywriter so I cannot say, but I can say that starting is very important. Start and the more you write, the better you become.

How do you stay on top of your game?

Consistency. I constantly show up even when I don’t have great content. I show up.

Words on marble right there, Hauwa. Showing up is key. Tell us, what’s your endgame? World acclaim? Societal change? The bag?

I would like to contribute to the empowerment of women in society and secure the bag, of course!

Solid goals! And we’re rooting for you too! Do you have any words for the up and coming?

Lol. I am up and coming! Any words for me?

Lmao artful dodging. Nice one. Thank you so much for doing this, Hauwa.

Thank you for having me.

Hauwa is funny on her social media but is a lot more serious on her Medium blog. In there, you see her skills as a creator. From beautiful short stories to well-written think pieces, Hauwa’s mind is on full display to be admired. No wonder she can turn us like eba anytime she wishes. And just like she says, the secret is that she shows up consistently.
