What do your stilettos say about your confidence?
I have always been a fan of heels. Not just stilettos but any kind. There’s this extra classiness I get when I wear them. I feel every step I take and, honestly, it’s not because it’s a normal feeling you get but because I am very careful not to accidentally bend my heels to the side and get those awkward humour-triggered stares.
It is also very scary for me because my heels could get damaged in the process and I could get a semi-permanent injury from that accident. My mum usually gives me that you-are-going-to-break-your-legs look and I totally understand but I just don’t care.
What I do most times, as is seemingly the general guide now due to bad roads in Lagos, is to put my heels in my bag and wear flip flops. This doesn’t give that classy feeling I need but it is better than getting a you-caused-it-yourself roar of laughter from bystanders.
I love stilettos! Whenever I see a lady wearing them, I just feel there is this shared confidence especially when I am coincidentally on one as well. I think there should be a general greeting style for us when we see our stiletto mates.
Something like a silent nod or a shared confident smile that says, “Yes, sister. Good choice of shoes!”
What do your stilettos say about your pocket?
Yes! Just as they can be very pleasing to the eyes, they can be very displeasing to your pockets – but you just have to buy them right? When did shoes get so expensive?
Except you earn high 5 figures and above in Nigerian Naira, buying stilettos is usually shifted to the next payday. You don’t just stop at a store on your way back from work to get stilettos except you had already planned that purchase when you got your previous pay. Notwithstanding, stilettos still get all the love.
My friend, Anita, who runs an online shoe sales platform informs me, “Stilettos still get all the love. I sell, at the very least, five pairs in a day, and, my dear, it’s not small money.”
I don’t blame anyone getting stilettos. They are just lovely and that is literally an understatement.
What do your stilettos say about your lifestyle?
I could wear stilettos anywhere – to work, to church, to a party, to a meeting, to a social convention, to the orphanage, to the bank, and pretty much everywhere else.
The percentage of women who wear heels is, according to research, 72%, and a very good percentage wear them every day. I understand that it’s not just stilettos but we are not sure how much or how less of that percentage wears them.
My colleague, Joy, 29, says she wears them to the gym. “I know I take it off at some point but you’ll be shocked by the number of things I do on stilettos at the gym.” There is just no limit. Women love class!
“I just prefer them to flats and they have to be six inches.” That’s what Mrs. Eno, 30, tells me. “I buy flats and no matter how fine, I eventually give them away but my stilettos stay with me. I always have enough to last me from 6 months to one year.”
Blame it on the love for high class but stilettos get so much love.
What do your stilettos say about your height?
I don’t think it has anything to do with your height. Yes, heels may be mostly worn by ladies below 5”4 but we are not sure of that presumption yet and, honestly, I have seen more tall ladies on heels in recent times.
I used to say they look better on shorter ladies but I have made been made to eat my words. It looks good on everybody – tall or small.
Let’s not forget how good they look on models who are mostly presumed tall.
What do your stilettos say about your girl power?
Is it just me or do men get more attracted or intimidated by you when you’re on heels? When I arrive at social gatherings on heels, I just get this the-classy-one-has-come look from people, mostly of the opposite sex.
Maybe I am alone in my world but I also get that look when I attend interviews on heels. It’s hilarious when interviewers think they are the only ones studying you and they forget that it’s a human they are critically analyzing. Stilettos give me this natural confident presence. I don’t have to force it. The universe approves it, seals it, and drops it.
On the other side, they can also get very painful. I don’t advise that stilettos should be worn for more than 2 hours on the spot. They can be very sinister to your toes when they are pressed on them for too long. If you have to stand on them, take breaks and sit for some time. This would help you care for your toenails.
