Movie Review: “Nobody” Transforms into Bloody Action

Ilya Naishuller, in my opinion, does not get enough praise, in Hollywood, for his amazing work. But hopefully, this movie will give him the accolades he deserve.
Movie Review: Nobody

What would happen if John Wick grew old and started a family and people still came to mess with him? What you get is “Nobody”, Directed by Ilya Naishuller, the director of the crazy action movie, Hardcore Henry – which I seriously recommend you see. The man delivers yet another mind-blowing action movie with a very relatable and compelling story. Unlike most Hollywood action movies, this one, from my point of view, is well thought out.

Nobody with a Routine

The movie is centred on Hutch Mansell, played by Bob Odenkrik (Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul), who appears to be the most boring family man in cinema history. His life is routine: wake up in the morning, workout, have breakfast, go to work, and come back home. Nothing incredible ever happens to Hutch. He is less than average in the neighbourhood and often emasculated by his average neighbours.

However, everything changed when his house is attacked by armed robbers and he failed to act. This, of course, makes him the laughing stock of the community but it doesn’t bother him until he finds out the robbers stole his little girl’s cat bracelet.

From Nobody to Hardcore Killing Machine

This is where everything changed in the movie. Hutch is immediately transformed from a family guy to a hardcore non-stop killing machine and that is as far as I go to avoid spoilers.

The performances in the movie were excellent; Bob Odenkrik did what he does best and he sold everybody on the boring family man act. Even the switch to ‘badass’ was very well crafted and thought out. His back story is shady but we get a very good idea of what he was in his youthful days.

We also get two amazing supporting characters in the movie, RZA (Man With The Iron Fist, Brick Mansions, Mr Right), and the ever-awesome Christopher Lloyd of the “Back To The Future” franchise. “Back to the Future” is an old franchise from the 80s but it is a movie everyone must experience.

Ilya Naishuller, in my opinion, does not get enough praise, in Hollywood, for his amazing work. But hopefully, this movie will give him the accolades he deserve.

RZA and Christopher Lloyd pretty much stole the show in the third act of the movie (Nobody). I am doing my very best not to give any spoilers but the third act of this movie is one of the best I’ve seen in the last 5 years. The movie is surprisingly good and it builds up from 0 to 100, very organically, without feeling rushed or displaced.

The cinematography of this movie is very much what you would expect from the director of ‘Hardcore Henry’ – Ilya Naishuller. By the way, I recommend you see ‘Hardcore Henry’, if you love over-the-top action.

Reviewer’s Note

Positives

  • Thrilling all-round action
  • The slow build-up was worth it
  • Great performances from the entire cast
  • Ilya Naishuller is a great director

Negatives

  • Honestly, I can’t think of anything for this type of movie. Everything was very well done.
