“I don’t think human beings were created to fit into a box” – Adeola Adegbite, the Midnight Parrot

Adeola is the engine room of Talku Talku. When she's not doing that, she's creating great fashion pieces. In this feature, we journey down her creative path with her as The Midnight Parrot at Talku Talku and as Deola the awesome creative.

Every team requires an organizer to function as best as it can. At Talku Talku, Adeola Adegbite the Midnight Parrot fills that role perfectly.

Over the past two weeks, we’ve dedicated the Creative Showcase segment to showcase the team. After all, if we don’t blow our trumpets, who will?

We’ve seen how Talku Talku is set up to achieve the vision of being the largest incubator of creative energy in Nigeria, focusing on the content we produce for your consumption and how they fit into the mission and vision of the brand.

Then, Emmanuel, the Big Parrot took us on a journey into his mind space and how he conceived the idea of a fully remote creative agency like Talku Talku. He also tells us about how he is assembling a great team to fill in the gaps in Nigeria’s creative space.

Deola is at the heart of this team, serving in the role of the Executive Assistant. She makes sure the organization runs smoothly on a day-to-day basis. She has also been serving great content in the Fashion & Beauty, Foodie, Legal, and Art sections of the website.

Deola the Midnight Parrot
Deola has a fun personality that endears people to her

Adeola Adegbite, our midnight parrot, is a woman of many talents. She has a degree in Law from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, and is a self-proclaimed bibliophile. “For me, reading is a sort of safe space. It’s me being able to step into another world and get a feel of other characters,” she says.

“It’s like people traveling and experiencing other cultures. I can do that with reading too,” she adds.

Deola started writing to declutter her mind. She says it’s an exercise that helps her understand a lot of things, including life decisions. People who come from a large family like hers – Deola has five siblings (four older brothers and one younger sister) – can relate to having a sibling who has such tendencies.

“Growing up was fun for me. It was full of activities that boys enjoyed,” she says of her childhood. “I used to play football a lot and play video games. I always wanted to hang out with my brothers.” As a primary school pupil and secondary school student, one thing she was very sure of was her love for creativity and art.

She spent most of her childhood having fun and dabbling in all things that could allow her to be creative or enjoy creativity, which eventually influenced her path. But her family played a big role in her decision to study and earn a Law degree.

“A lot of people in my family have legal backgrounds,” she said. “My dad is a judge, my late grandfather was a judge before he died, and I have a lot of uncles and aunties that were lawyers. So it was easy to decide what to study when the time came.”

She officially switched career paths mentally when she gave herself the “permission to be more than just one thing.” She pursued Law, her first love, but noted things that she liked and began pursuing them.

Deola
Deola likes to have fun as much as she enjoys her work. She works hard and plays hard.

“I said to myself: ‘I like to write. That means that I can become a writer.’ I also like to look good, which translates to my desire to create clothes as a fashion designer. My parents are amazing and were supportive, which helped my siblings and I carve out our paths,” she says.

“I don’t think human beings were created to fit into a box, ” Deola adds. “Labels are powerful. When you tell somebody you’re this, the impression that gives is that you can’t do anything else.

“Like saying that you can’t be a doctor and also a singer. I beg to differ. You can be as many things as you want to be because human beings are complex. We have layers, and we can do whatever it is we set our minds to.”

She is building a personal brand as a creative and fashion designer while also creating magic with the rest of the parrots in Talku Talku. However, juggling it all is not so easy for her, like many creatives who are building from the ground up.

“One thing that helps me is that I’m quite a spontaneous person,” she says. “I’d always do the things that make me feel good at the moment. I also do not like to put myself in a position where I’m at the receiving end of someone’s anger or disappointment, so I try to be as methodical as possible and get my work done.”

Deola finds encouragement in the distance that the creative scene has covered in Nigeria.

Although the system has a long way to go, especially in the area of appreciating creatives financially and otherwise, it’s not where it used to be, as many kids can now confidently say they want to pursue different careers in the creative space.

She opines that the freedom which the coming generation is given to express themselves will do wonders in the creative scene.

She hopes she can speak to people with her work and provide an escape for people. You can follow her on Twitter @_adetemi and Instagram @deola.adegbite to keep up with all her awesome content here on Talku Talku.

I enjoyed reading Adeola story. Like she said, when you give someone a label, it’s like telling them they can’t be anything else. —We can be all and more. The only limitations we have are the ones we create for ourselves.

Chima, thank you for this amazing creative showcase. Adeola is everything creative, pure and supreme talent.
