Your lifestyle is a window through which the world sees your lifestyle. This is shown in so many ways, and your dress-sense is part of it. Your fashion style depicts your lifestyle – your appearance, most times, is directly proportional to the perception people have of you.
Your fashion style and your society
If you have watched “Walk of Shame” by Steven Brill, you would have an idea of the message I am trying to pass here. For people who haven’t had the pleasure, it’s about a lady (Elizabeth Banks) whose ambition as a news anchor is almost shattered when she wakes up in a stranger’s apartment after a one-night stand and literally makes a walk of shame to her place of employment.
Because of how revealing her dress is, she is mistaken for a club girl on her way amidst so many embarrassing and shocking encounters. Although this movie is a comedy, it addresses some serious issues in society. It emphasized how the attitude of a man switches the moment he realizes that you need his help. In her case, her outfit gives her double trouble.
It is largely because of instances like this that parents take out time to dress their kids up and teach them how to dress up properly. Even in schools, your dress-sense is paramount, and these are the primary places of socialization for a child. You are taught to tuck in your shirts, polish your shoes, comb your hair or make your hair (as the case may be), button your shirts properly, and all other responsible ways to dress up.
In the corporate world, your appearance is of utmost importance. You are not allowed to wear your club outfits to works. This is not to say that club outfits are wrong, but they do not fit into the corporate setting. You are only allowed to be more casual when you work in a less corporate environment like some media houses, fashion outlets, or other casual settings.
How your fashion style shows your personal preferences
Given the differences in our personalities as humans, we have different preferences on how we dress up. Even identical twins differ in the specific preferences that differentiate them. I don’t have to tell you that I’m a Tomboy for you to realize that – it will show in my appearance. I must appear in my boyish outfits any time you see me. There are some girly activities you won’t see me engaged in.
If I am a very self-conscious person, you would notice it in my fashion style. My outfits would be neat and straightened out every time; my hair would be neat every time; my shoes would always look clean, and you would hardly find faults in my appearance. I must have made sure of that. Cholerics are known to have this attribute a lot.
If I am a person that takes no consideration for anything you think about me, I would not care about how I appeared. Sanguines fall into this category most times as they are always free with their thoughts. They want to be flexible every time, and they pay little or no attention to how they appear.
Some people are fashion-conscious. They want to wear real designers every time. They spend their last to appear fashionable. I know a friend who prefers to spend her money on clothes and the latest wigs. To some, it’s fashion, and to others, it’s simply a show of wealth. Either way, their personalities are revealed.
On the other hand, some other people pay little or no attention to their fashion styles. They do not see it as a priority, but they make sure they appear neat and presentable. Their outfits may not be sparkly clean, but they make sure it is not shabby.
More so, your proper dress-sense is more likely to come to play in your subconscious when you are about to appear before a specific category of persons. These persons could be potential in-laws, employers, religious leaders, or even your parents during a visit. You are conscious enough not to appear irresponsible before them. This is one of the reasons why the first impression matters a lot. Nobody pays attention to your inner person at a first meeting.
Wrapping this up, your fashion style goes a long way in telling people about your way of living. People only need to take one good look at you for them to address you appropriately.
