Creative Round-up: The Chevening Scholarship Programme For 2022/2023 Applications  Is Now Open     

Dear Creative, two weeks ago, in our maiden edition of the Creative Round-up, I shared my concerns about how fast 2022 is moving. And just like that, we are now in August. Anyway, Happy new month. May the new month be kind to us as we continue to propel creativity.

Although we are just six days into August, there have been a lot of amazing happenstances in the creative space. I am utterly convinced that you missed these events for one reason or the other but not to worry, I got you covered with this week’s Creative Round-up. Dear creative, some of these events are life-changing opportunities; please endeavor to read to the end.

Chevening scholarship

 1. The Chevening Scholarship Programme For 2022/2023 Applications  Is Now Open 

On August 2nd, 2022, The government of the UK officially opened the application portals for the 2023/2024 Chevening scholarships. The Chevening scholarship provides full financial support to successful scholars to study for any eligible master’s degree at any UK university. Dear creative, this is an opportunity and an avenue to experience a diverse socio-cultural mix that will globalize your creativity. Fortunately, this year’s intake is on the high side, with over 1,500 scholarship slots. So hurry now and apply, as applications will close on November 1st, 2022.

2. Ebenezer Obey Wages War Against Drugs Abuse As He Mourns 48-Year-Old Son, Olayinka

On July 31st, 2022, tragedy struck the family of 80-year-old Juju musician Ebenezer Obey Fabiyi as he lost his 48-year-old son, Olayinka. According to the musician, the doctors had informed him six months earlier that Yinka would die. All attempts to help him manage his addiction problems failed eventually. Though Yinka’s death breaks his heart tremendously, the musician is relentless. He has declared war on drug and substance abuse by launching a new ministry dubbed “Freedom from Alcoholism and Drug Addiction Ministry.”

3. Afrobeats Pioneer, Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s 25th Memorial Anniversary

I bet you didn’t know it’s been 25 years since afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti died. Fela died of complications from AIDS on August 2nd, 1997. Perhaps the world has forgotten, but the icon’s family didn’t. His first son, Femi Kuti, took to Instagram to celebrate his 25th memorial anniversary with a post that reads:

“25years on still in our heart, miss you more and more. The one and only Abami eda #FELA the SOUL of #Afrobeat.”

His daughter, Yeni Kuti, and last son, Seun Kuti also paid tribute on social media.

4. Burna Boy Becomes First African Artiste To Sell Out State Farm Arena In Atlanta

Barely a month after making Barack Obama’s 2022 summer playlist, Burna Boy has achieved another feat in his musical career. On August 1st, 2022, the one-time Grammy award winner makes history as the first African artiste to sell out State Farm Arena in Atlanta. He took to Twitter to confirm this feat. At the start of the year,  Burna Boy had sold out the famous Madison Square Garden at 20,000 capacity and the 19,000-capacity Toyota Center in America.

5. Veteran Nollywood Actress Ngozi Nwosu Requests For Fans Prayers As She Celebrates 59th Birthday 

On August 1st, 2022, veteran Nollywood actress Ngozi Nwosu requested that her fans and family pray for her as she celebrates her 59th birthday anniversary. She took to Instagram to share cute pictures and videos of herself with the caption, “Just say a prayer for me. Pray for me now! Loads of love.” The actress is famous for mastering the Yoruba and Igbo language in acting. And also her role as “Mama Peace” in the Television series Fuji House of Commotion.

6. FunTimes Magazine Essay Writing Competition Is On-going  

Dear Creative writer, bring out your quill; we have an essay competition to win. On August 1st, 2022, FunTimes Magazine launched an essay writing competition. The competition is open to all black writers and thought leaders. The topic is The Importance of Black Culture. All entries should be within a minimum of 500 words and a maximum of 650 words. The first position is priced at $200, while the second and third are entitled to $150 and $100, respectively. So, dear creative, apply now; applications close on August 14th.

Conclusion

Dear creative, first things first; say no to drugs and substance abuse. While it might give a temporary high, the side effects are often permanent and lead to eventual death. Also, don’t forget to apply for the Chevening scholarship and enter the FunTimes Magazine essay competition.
