7 Common mistakes people make when setting goals: Why are your goals so achievable?

Why are your goals looking so achievable?

A goal is an idea of the future or desired result that a person or a group of people envision, plan and commit to achieve. People endeavor to reach goals within a finite time by setting deadlines. This definition by Wikipedia says it all for me. For something to be called a desire, it should be beyond what I can achieve myself. That is why we have wishes. Wishes actually come through when you plan and commit to realizing them.

Goals are essential parts of human life. We all have dreams we want to achieve at set times. For example, we were born without names, dreams, beliefs, worries, and all other things that add purpose to our lives. We were literally “empty”. Even when our parents named us with their different hopes and dreams for us, we had nothing much to think of.

However, when we became conscious that we were humans with several results to be achieved, we started making plans to get results in several areas of our lives. A child is expected to walk at a particular age. We are expected to go to school from the lowest to the highest level of education we could get to at an expected age range. We are also expected to get jobs, get married and have kids at a specific age. To achieve these, planning has to be set and effectively followed through.

Goals go in accordance with dreams. A dream remains in your dreams when goals are not set to be achieved. No matter how big your dream is, you must set goals for them if they should become reality.

Common mistakes people make when setting goals

Fear

It is very wrong to set goals with fear in mind. Fit your plans into your goals. Get to work! Forget about how big the goals are and follow your plans through.

Failure to plan

Goals are never achieved without plans. Plans are your stepping stones to meet targets. They give you reliable paths to follow. It is paramount that you plan in anything you do.

Lack of commitment

It is not enough to set plans aside. You should also be ready to do the work. Make the necessary connections. Pay visits when needed and follow up on your prospective deals. Deliver beyond expectations. This keeps people glued to you.

Distractions

Please avoid getting involved with too many activities as they may distract you. Choose a direction for every goal you set. Set your schedules right. Have a time for fun and relaxation but keep your goals in mind and give priority to them.

Lack of mentor-ship

Mentors are like yardsticks. They give you a template on how you should go about your goals. Are you a big fan of Joke Silver? Look for all the things she did that made her so lovable. Not having mentors is like walking into a new house with a blindfold on. You might miss your way. Goals and mentors always go hand in hand.

Procrastination

A lot of people are guilty of this. Sometimes, I do this and it’s not healthy for goal getting. It is like laziness but it is not about not doing it all. There is a will but the time is stolen when you push forward your important activities.

Not having deadlines

Deadlines put a check on your activities. They instill that consciousness in you that you have to be actively concerned. Check out my article on https://talkutalku.com/deadlines-the-procrastinators-best-friend/ and get hints on how to overcome procrastination. There should be a set time for your goal to be achieved. This guides your priorities and choices.

In the end, it is very important to set goals. Don’t set achievable goals because they don’t challenge you to do extraordinary things. If your goal can be achieved easily then, it is merely a to-do list.
